TEACHERS, parents, health workers and community workers experienced a lesson like no other at the Sensory Detective Workshop for Autism training in Mount Isa.

PARENTING a child with Asperger's Syndrome can be like fumbling around in the dark, a fact Asperger's educator Nelle Frances knows all too well.

Dubbo parents, teachers, community support workers and carers have gained a better understanding of Autism after undertaking a workshop by special needs educator Nelle Frances.

Proserpine Community Centre welcomed a special guest on Sunday when education consultant Nelle Frances conducted an Autism workshop. Ms Frances is an authority on Autism and has written books and conducts workshops on the topic across Australia.

Author, consultant, parent and educator Nelle Frances is hosting an information session at Morra Hall in Oneroa. Families, teachers and health professionals are invited to come along to learn strategies for use at home and in the classroom.

The team at Special Needs Book Review congratulates Nelle Frances for her fine series of children's books for kids with autism, Ben and His Helmet series. Ms. Frances' series offers sound advice and helpful solutions not only to kids with autism spectrum disorders, but also to children with sensory processing disorders, ADHD, etc. who are overwhelmed by all the demands and sensory overload they face every minute of every day.

ESTABLISHING A SENSORY PROFILE For individuals on the Autism Spectrum sensory processing issues fall into two types or categories - their senses can either be over-reactive or under-reactive. Commonly though individuals with ASD are a combination of the two extremes, with a dash of 'neutral' as well.

THERE were laughs, tears and a peculiar collaboration of noise coming from the Coachman's Inn yesterday as parents, carers, teachers and specialists flocked to the motel for a workshop about dealing with children who have autism and Asperger's syndrome.
